Suspected thugs have invaded the rally venue of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, setting canopies and vehicles on fire.
The rally, billed for 9am on Saturday at the popular “Sharp Corner” situated along Poly Road, Iyekhei, Auchi, was to welcome those decamping from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to APC.
However, the party said the rally, where the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, is to officially welcome the new members who recently joined the party, would still hold as planned despite the invasion.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu had in December suspended a planned rally to welcome former PDP governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to APC.
The IGP said this was to “forestall any breakdown of law and order”.
It was in response to a letter by the Deputy Governor of the state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, asking the Police to halt the rally as the intent was to “destabilise peace” that was enjoyed in the state.
Despite the ban on political rallies by the government of Edo state, Ize-Iyamu, went on to hold a defection rally at his Benin residence.
Oshiomhole was, however, absent at the event.
