UPDATE: Court Grants Shehu Sani N10m Bail

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted N10m bail to a former senator representing Kaduna central, Shehu Sani.

Justice Inyang Ekwo granted Senator Sani bail on Monday after he was arraigned on two counts of bribery and advance fee fraud.

The charges were preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Moving the bail application, Sani’s counsel, Abdul Ibrahim, asked the court to grant bail to his client. He said the defendant would not interfere with the witnesses that would be called in the case.

He also asked the court to consider that the defendant would need to take care of his family, businesses and prepare adequately for trial.

Opposing the application, the prosecution counsel, Abba Mohammed, said there is a chance that the former senator would interfere with witnesses in the case. He asked the court to refuse the bail request.

After listening to the arguments of the two lawyers, Justice Ekwo said the prosecution did not show good reasons why the defendant should not be admitted to bail.

He was granted bail in the sum of N10 million and a surety that must be a responsible citizen with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction. The registrar of the court is to verify the authenticity of the landed property.

According to the judge, Sani must not travel outside Nigeria without obtaining permission from the court.

“N10 million with one surety, the surety should be an owner of a landed property within the jurisdiction of this court. Registry of this court should verify the property.

“The defendant should deposit his valid international passport.

“The defendant should remain in EFCC custody pending the fulfilment of his bail,” Justice Ekwo held.

The matter was, thereafter, adjourned till February 24 for commencement of trial.
