The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented Certificate of Return to Bayelsa Governor-elect, Senator Douye Diri and Deputy Governor-elect, Lawrence Ewhrujakpo.
This followed Thursday’s Supreme Court judgment that sacked the Bayelsa Governor-elect David Lyon and his Deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over false certificates presented to INEC.
On Friday, the electoral commission in a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja declared the PDP candidate winner of the November 16, 2019, election.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu told journalists that Diri was declared the winner after top officials met on Friday morning to review the results of the election, without the votes of the APC which had been voided by the court.
“The total votes cast after excluding those of the APC now stand at 146,999. PDP polled 143,172 and scored 25 percent as required by the law,” Yakubu said during the briefing.
The Certificate of Return was presented by INEC National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, shortly after the Chairman announced the decision to comply with the Supreme Court judgment.
In his acceptance speech, Diri thanked God, INEC and judiciary for being the hope of the common man and assured the people of Bayelsa of good governance.
