UITH Suspends Top Official Over Death Of Suspected COVID-19 Patient

The management of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has suspended a senior consultant at the hospital, Professor Kazeem Salami over his alleged role in covering up the health status of a COVID-19 patient, a UK returnee who died at the hospital.

Salami’s suspension was announced in a statement made available on Monday night by the UITH director of administration, David Odaibo.

He said the top official was suspended “as a result of his conduct in the management of a COVID-19 patient”.

“The Management of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital hereby suspends Prof A.K. Salami as a Senior Consultant in the hospital.

“This is as a result of his unethical conduct in the admission, management and eventual release of the corpse of a suspected COVID-19 patient who died in the hospital on the 3rd of April, 2020,” the statement read.

Recall that the COVID-19 committee in the state had said the deceased and his wife arrived from the United Kingdom, reportedly came to Ilorin on 20th March, 2020, and went into self-quarantine without reaching out to the government or the technical committee.

“On the 13th day of the self-quarantine, the husband suddenly had difficulties breathing after reportedly eating dinner and was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Efforts to resuscitate him proved abortive and he was pronounced dead.

“Owing to the travel history of the deceased, all the medics who attended to him at the UITH have gone into self-quarantine. Similarly, family members who have had contact with the deceased and his wife have been directed to do same. For abundance of caution, samples have been taken from his wife and four others and results are expected in the coming days.”

On Monday, Kwara announced its first two confirmed cases of COVID-19, in which one turned out to be the wife of the deceased.

“One is the wife of the UITH patient, a UK returnee, who died last Thursday and the other is another UK returnee,” the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye said in a statement.
