John Momoh, President of the University of Lagos Alumni Association Worldwide, has been appointed as the Interim Chairman of the institution’s governing council.
Momoh’s first task will be to ratify the appointment of new Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola.
Prof. Ogunsola’s appointment was announced on Monday after the Senate Council of the university voted in her favour.
The Professor of Medical Microbiology was voted in an interim capacity to help ease the university through its current fracas.
The result of the election bringing in Prof. Ogunsola has been forwarded to the Deputy Registrar and Director of Academic Affairs, Mrs Olakunle Makinde.
Momoh, who is highly respected within the university is expected, in his new role, to coordinate the affairs of the institution, as a representative of the federal government.
In the letter containing his appointment and referenced FME/PS/606/C.I/III/129 and titled “Emergency Meeting of the Governing Council of University of Lagos”, Momoh was directed to “consider and, if found suitable, approve the senate nomination of the acting vice-chancellor” for the university.
“You are to preside at the meeting in the absence of the substantive pro-chancellor/chairman of council who has had to recuse himself in line with the visitor’s directive,” the letter read.
“You are to also submit a report on the decision of the council to the visitor through the honourable minister of education immediately thereafter.”
Sacked Vice Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN) went on a splurge of power contests which necessitated the intervention of the federal government.
President Muhammadu Buhari last week announced that both men should step aside as he set up a panel to look into the situation and submit a result in the next two weeks.
