Just In: Buhari Constitutes Panel Over UNILAG Crisis, Asks Ogundipe, Babalakin To Step Aside From Official Duties

President Muhammadu Buhari has constituted a special visitation panel to look into the ongoing crisis in the University of Lagos and has asked Prof. Toyin Ogundipe the embattled and sacked Vice Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Wale Babalakin to recuse themselves from official duties.

The President gave the panel two weeks to submit their report.

Recall that both the sacked Vice Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the school’s governing council have been at loggerheads, with accusations of mismanagement of funds, and other gross misconducts leveled against the VC.

The sacked VC has however contested the grounds on which he was sacked, while he also queried the process of his dismissal saying the school’s Senate members were not carried along in the process.

Prof. Ogundipe who filed a lawsuit initially has withdrawn the lawsuit.

The lawsuit which was marked NICN/LA/278/2020, had as defendants: UNILAG; the varsity’s Council; its Senate; Pro-Chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin (SAN); Registrar, Oladejo Azeez; and Prof. Theophilus Soyombo, who was appointed acting VC in the wake of Ogundipe’s controversial sacking.

Ogundipe had filed an ex parte application, which was pending for hearing before the court.

The decision to withdraw the lawsuit was to allow the President who is a Visitor to the university act as Prof. Ogundipe has enough time to still file a case, according to one of his attorneys, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.
