Nigerian basketball player, Michael Ojo, 27, died on Friday during a training session in Serbia, his former team Red Star Belgrade announced.
“The sudden and shocking death of Michael Ojo has deeply affected everyone — players, coaches and the management of a club that accepted him from the first day, and that he considered his own,” Red Star said in a statement.
The club, however, did not mention the cause of his death but local media reported that Ojo suffered cardiac arrest.
Ojo was born in Lagos and 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m) tall. He played for Florida State University in the United States before he moved to Europe where he started his professional basketball career with FMP Belgrade.
In 2018, he signed with the regional Adriatic League champions, Red Star Belgrade, where he was popular among the club’s fans.
The deceased had been without a club since June 30 but was still training with Red Star.
