The Edo State Police Command has paraded six suspects for allegedly raping and killing a 100-Level Microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Uwaila Vera Omozuwa, at a church premises in Ihovbe quarters, Benin City, Edo State.
Recall that the late Uwaila had gone to the church to read when the suspects raped and inflicted serious injury on her that eventually led to her death on May 28 and 30, 2020, respectively according to the police. The incident generated outrage across the country, with several Nigerians calling for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the brutal act.
Parading the suspects on Wednesday, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, named them as Nelson Ogbebor, Akato Valentine, Mrs Tina Samuel, Mrs Mary Ade, Nosa Osabohien and Collins Ulegbe.
“The matter is of great concern to the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, who sent homicide experts to work with our policemen in Benin,” the CP said.
“What we are seeing today is a result of the efforts of the police to get at the root of the crime, and today, I announce to you that the perpetrators have been arrested.”
According to Kokumo, the post-mortem confirmed that the deceased was raped.
He stated he had earlier told the people of the state that the police would do all in their powers to unmask and arrest those behind her death, adding that the parade of the suspects had made good their promise.
