Professor Florence Obi of the Faculty of Education and one-time deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has emerged as the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the university.
She is the first female to be so elected in 45 years.
Prof. Obi will take over from Prof. Zana Akpagu, whose tenure elapses on November 30, 2020.
Chairman of the University Governing Council and the Pro-Chancellor, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, disclosed to journalists on Friday that Prof. Obi emerged victorious over twelve others who were qualified as well.
She noted that the governing council was guided by the guidelines for the screening of a vice-chancellor as provided by the federal ministry of education. She maintained the screening exercise was transparent, free and fair to all participants.
“You can see the tranquility in this governing council. What we assured the university community is that we were going to be transparent, open, fair, and just.
“There is a guideline from the Ministry of Education as to how to conduct interview for the appointment of a vice-chancellor. There are so many parameters we had to look into and that is exactly what we did,” she said.
Prof. Obi expressed gratitude to God for her success and pledged to run an inclusive administration.
