Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) branches, have revealed why they’re backing the Pro-Chancellor of UNILAG, Dr. Wale Babalakin, to continue in his role.
Recall that the governing council of the university led by Babalakin had in August sacked Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, citing financial misappropriation. But staff unions rejected the removal, stating that the vice chancellor was not given a fair hearing.
As part of efforts to resolve the resultant crisis, the Federal Government constituted a special visitation panel to investigate the issues surrounding the removal of Ogundipe.
In a document submitted to the visitation panel, SSANU and NASU faulted the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for declaring Babalakin persona non-grata on the university campus.
“The Visitation panel must understand that JAC of SSANU and NASU is pleased with the Council led by Dr Wale Babalakin for the obvious reason that he was committed to staff welfare issues,” the unions said.
Both unions expressed confidence in Babalakin’s leadership as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council.
SSANU and NASU said they’re hoping that the visitation panel would address the stagnation/non-promotion of non-teaching workers, the discrimination against non-teaching staff in the allocation of staff residential quarters, among others.
