#EndSARS: Obaseki Laments Killing Of Protesters, Promises Prosecution Of Culprits

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, lamented the killing of some protesters marching against police brutality in the state.

The protesters had joined their colleagues nationwide to embark on a peaceful protest, demanding the total reformation of police and prosecution of police officers responsible for brutalisation of Nigerians in the past.

But they were attacked by hoodlums, leading to loss of lives and injuries.

In a series of tweets, Obaseki described the incident as “disheartening”.

While extending condolences to the victims of the attack, the governor called on the police to “get out on the streets” and secure the protesters.

He promised that thorough investigation would be conducted to identify those responsible and justice would be served.

“I have just learnt that hoodlums are attacking #EndSARS protesters, who have conducted themselves peacefully in Benin City. I extend condolences to the victims of the attack, including those who lost their lives and others who were injured by the thugs,” Obaseki tweeted.

“It is disheartening that anyone would attack a peaceful assembly of young people, who are expressing genuine concerns to #EndSARS, police brutality and intimidation in their own country.

“I hereby call on the Police Command in the state to get out on the streets and provide adequate security for the #EndSARS protesters and ensure that no one is harassed in the course of exercising their rights in Edo State.

“Thorough investigation would be conducted immediately to fish out the culprits of the attack on peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Benin City, and we would do all possible within the law to ensure those culpable are brought to justice.”

Earlier, the Edo state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had condemned the attack, supporting the right of residents to protest.

The party accused the Edo People’s Movement (EPM), a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), of sponsoring the thugs to attack protesters.

There have been similar cases of thugs attacking peaceful protesters in some other states like Lagos, and Osun, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
