Peaceful protesters, on Thursday, besieged the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, to demand the disbandment of the controversial Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.
Their demand is against the backdrop of harassment and brutalisation of young Nigerians by police.
Popular comedian, Debo Adebayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, also camped with the protesters overnight, just outside the assembly complex.
Late Thursday night, the protesters alleged that they were being harassed by men of the Police Force despite their peaceful conduct.
As part of efforts to curb the incessant abuse of human rights by police, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had on Sunday, banned SARS and other tactical squads from “routine search and stop and search duties.”
Specifically, he warned the officers against the invasion of the privacy of citizens particularly through indiscriminate and unauthorised search of mobile phones, laptops, and other smart devices.
But several Nigerians have rejected the ban, demanding an outright disbandment of the controversial unit, SARS.
