The Nigerian Senate says it has received a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari seeking the confirmation of Professor Mahmoud Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Recall that Buhari had in October announced his decision to nominate Yakubu for a second term in office.
At the resumption of legislative proceedings on Tuesday, Senate President Ahmad Lawan read the president’s letter.
In his letter, Buhari solicited for the lawmakers’ expeditious consideration of his request for another five-year tenure for Yakubu as INEC Chairman.
Earlier in November, he handed over his duties as chairman of the electoral body to Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Muazu at an event held at INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Ahmed is currently acting in that capacity pending the Senate confirmation of Yakubu’s reappointment.
