United States Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has decided to ignore former President Donald Trump after the latter launched a blistering attack against him, CNN reports.
The American broadcaster quoted a source familiar with the matter as saying McConnell laughed about Trump’s latest attack against him.
Trouble began between the two former allies in December 2020 after the then Senate majority leader acknowledged President Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election, and opted not to back Trump’s baseless claim that the election was stolen from him.
The election fraud claims fuelled the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, which led to the impeachment of the former president in the House of Representatives for “incitement of insurrection”.
Last Saturday, the Senate fell short of votes required to convict Trump.
Although McConnell voted to acquit the former president, arguing that the Senate lacked jurisdiction to try a former president, he didn’t spare him any criticism after the vote, as he directly accused him of inciting the Capitol violence by spreading lies of election fraud.
“Former President Trump’s actions preceding the riot were a disgraceful dereliction of duty,” McConnell said on the floor of the upper chamber.
On Tuesday evening, Trump issued a lengthy rebuttal, bitterly attacking McConnell, accusing him of being a poor leader.
“Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again,” Trump said in the statement. “He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country.”
But McConnell won’t take the bait and respond to Trump publicly, his allies told CNN.
“McConnell is way too disciplined,” the first source said.
“You probably are not going to hear him utter the name Donald Trump ever again,” said another source familiar with his thinking. “He’s moving on.”
