There was panic in Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, Tuesday evening as multiple gunshots and explosions were heard near the Gomari area of the state.
Explosions were also reportedly heard in Mairi area, a student’s village near the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).
The military is said to have deployed gun trucks to the area as earlier reports indicated that worshippers in a mosque on the street called “Layin Bori” may have been killed.
Although Maiduguri had suffered terrorist attacks in the past, the city had enjoyed relative peace in recent times.
In a statement, the Student Union Government of UNIMAID urged students to remain indoors.
“There is an ongoing attack in maiduguri, behind the institution. Students are urged to immediately ‘fall back’ to their rooms. Stay indoors and be calm as the security personnel are out there for effective protection,” the statement read.
