2Baba Becomes UN Refugees Ambassador

The United Nations has appointed Nigerian singer and record producer, Innocent Idibia (a.k.a 2Baba) as its Refugees Goodwill Ambassador.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) made the announcement on Tuesday.

2Baba becomes the first Nigerian to be appointed as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.

The agency acknowledged that for the past three years, 2Baba has dedicated his time to uplift the narrative of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) in Africa.

“As an Afropop music legend, 2Baba has given his voice to refugee and IDP causes. In 2017 he wrote and recorded, Hold My Hand, a song dedication to internally displaced persons, which helped raise funds for UNHCR’s humanitarian response.

“He has also generously contributed personal funds to support refugee and IDP families in Africa, while continuing to use his celebrity status to raise awareness and support for UNHCR’s work,” the agency wrote on its website.

UNHCR’s Director of External Relations said: “We welcome 2Baba to the UNHCR family as a Goodwill Ambassador and commend him for being part of the movement challenging the narrative of the African refugee.”

Tuface also confirmed the appointment on his Instagram page, he wrote:  “Honoured and humbled by my appointment as the regional goodwill ambassador of UNHCR. Thanks for the recognition.

“This will no doubt deepen my commitment to supporting the effort of UNHCR personnel and volunteers who are on ground every day, working hard to provide support and hope to millions of forcefully displaced persons across the world. Special thanks to donors and supporters of the cause.”
