774,000 Jobs: FG Begins Public Works Programme Despite NASS Suspension

Federal government has kicked off its public works programme despite suspension by the National Assembly.

The FG revealed this on its Twitter handle on Tuesday, with the selection committee also commencing work.

The FG tweeted that “The Special Public Works Programme of the Federal Government has kicked off nationwide. The State Selection Committees have been inaugurated and have commenced work. Find the names and contact details of members of your State’s Committee here.”

Recall that the Public Works programme of the federal government has generated controversy with Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo getting involved in a faceoff with the National Assembly.

The National Assembly thereafter announced the suspension of the programme and Keyamo insisted the legislative has no right to suspend a programme from the Presidency.

While Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has apologised to the NASS, Keyamo has stood his ground and said the programme will go on.

He has also been backed by President Muhammadu Buhari, who indicated his support for him.

The Public Works Programme of the federal government involves 774,000 jobs being distributed across every state in Nigeria.

NASS accused Keyamo of taking over the control of the programme from the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). While the Minister has since denied doing that, he has vowed to ensure fairness and equity in the distribution of the jobs.
