The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it has no problems with some of its members meeting with opposition lawmakers to earn their national assembly targets.
In a statement by the party, it said; “We are inundated with reports of our members in the National Assembly holding consultations with members of the opposition over the election of leaders into the 9th National Assembly. Let me state that our party has no objection to such consultations. It is a normal democratic practice world over to stretch hands across the divides. And contrary to some media reports, the actions of our members do not contradict the party’s position. APC has a comfortable majority in both chambers, therefore; we have the number to produce the leadership,”
The APC’s stand however is in contrast with the previous stand of the party Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole who stated that the party has the numbers to pip the opposition to leadership positions in the National Assembly.
He warned against alliances with other parties, saying it has been counterproductive from what experience suggests.
Ahmed Lawan, vying to become the Senate President, is being challenged by Ali Ndume and has met with three governors of the PDP for their support.
Also, Femi Gbajabiamila is seeking the House of Representatives’ Speakership and has met with lawmakers from the PDP for their support.
Both lawmakers’ decision was informed by the need to get two-third majority, which the APC does not have currently in both chambers of the National Assembly.
