While many see her as the wife of a successful entrepreneur and the King of comedy in Nigeria, to some she is a decorated banking veteran who gave obstacles a bloodied nose many years ago to see her vision come through.
ALEDEH team celebrates this icon of history, Mary Akpobome, one of Nigeria’s finest bankers.
Born July 11, 1968, to Ben Bassey Udoh, and Janet Bassey Udoh, in Efa, Akwa Ibom State, South-Eastern Nigeria, Mary Akpobome rose from a relatively unknown banker in 1991 to a position of an Executive Director of Heritage Banking Company Ltd, a new generation bank in Nigeria, West Africa.
A peep into Mary Akpobome’s life at 50 shows she remains a “record breaker in the face of many obstacles”.
Mary Akpobome’s Academic Background:
Mary Akpobome attended Qua Iboe Mission Secondary School in Etinan, Akwa Ibom State and proceeded to the University of Benin where she studied Theatre Arts graduating in 1991. She enrolled at the University of Lagos in 2001 where she obtained her MBA.
Mrs Akpobome is also an alumnus of the prestigious INSEAD and INSEAD Business School, Orchestrating Winning Performance (IMD), Lausanne, Switzerland and the Lagos Business School (LBS). She is a member of the Institute of Directors (IOD), a fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration (ICA). She is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIBN).
Mary Akpobome’s Banking Background:
Mary Akpobome started her over twenty (20) years banking career in Citizens International Bank where she spent eight (8) years carving a niche in Customer Services, Customer Care, and Relationship Management. She joined the former Platinum Bank Limited in 2000 as a Relationship Manager in the Personal Banking Group, however, due to her superlative business results; Mrs Akpobome was appointed the first Branch Business Manager of Platinum Bank’s Victoria Island 2 Branch where she won the MD/CEO’s award for Most Outstanding Bank.
In 2003, she was promoted to the position of Assistant Vice President and appointed the Regional Director of Lagos Island Region. She was a Senior Vice President responsible for the Commercial Banking Business in the Lagos Island Business Area. She had a stint with Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank).
Presently, Mary Akpobome is the Executive Director, Heritage Banking Company Ltd, a new generation bank in Nigeria.

Mary Akpobome’s Level of Selflessness:
Mary Akpobome is deeply passionate about bettering the lives of the needy. This is a passion that drove her to start a charity together with some of her colleagues in Bank PHB (now Keystone bank). The registered charity, “Ladies for the Needy”, since its existence, has brought comfort to the lives of orphans and disadvantaged children in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city specifically the Arrow of God Orphanage and Heart of Gold Hospice.
Apart from this, Mrs Akpobome will officially launch the “Purple Foundation For The Girl Child”, on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Civic Centre in Lagos.
Mary Akpobome’s Marital Life:
Mary is married with children to ace-comedian and compere, Atunyota Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba. The union is blessed with five (5) children, three (3) daughters, Xsara (first child), Brandi (second child), a set of twin boys, Ejiro (third child), Tejiri (fourth child) and Valeria (fifth child). The couple celebrated 12th wedding anniversary April 15 this year.
