BREAKING: FINALLY, SENATE CONFIRMS WALTER ONNOGHEN AS CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, March 1, confirmed Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Justice Onnoghen was confirmed as the CJN during Senate plenary sequel to the consideration of the letter sent to the National Assembly by Acting-President Yemi Osinbajo requesting his confirmation as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
During the period of his interrogation, Justice Onnoghen assured the senators that judiciary would be independent under his stewardship.
After answering series of questions put before him by the lawmakers, Justice Onnoghen took a bow and left the Senate.
President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki thereafter, put the question for his approval before the Senate. The lawmakers unanimously resolved to his confirmation.
Senator Saraki, who announced his confirmation congratulated the new CJN on his appointment, even as he directed that copies of the resolution be sent to the government, for immediate action.
Recall that the Nigerian Senate had on Tuesday, February 28, fixed today,March 1 for the screening of Justice Walter Onnoghen. Saraki announced the date at the resumption of plenary of the Red Chamber on Tuesday.
Justice Onnoghen has been in acting capacity as the Chief Justice of Nigeria since November 2016 amidst pressures on the Federal Government to confirm him as the substantive CJN.
Meanwhile Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, would retire from his position as the Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2021.
