Children’s Day: Edo Govt To Expand School Curriculum

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki , says his administration will review the Basic Education Curriculum to adequately prepare children for the challenges ahead.

He said subjects such as career development, history, guidance and counselling, ethics and morality would be introduced into the new curriculum.

Obaseki spoke at a thanksgiving held on Sunday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Benin, to celebrate the 2019 Children’s Day.

The governor said such education should serve as a tool for building good morale and a developed society.

“We want to use education to build a total human being so that by the time a child finishes junior secondary school, he or she knows what he wants in life and can fit into the society.

“Over the last 40 years, education has gone through so much transformation in the country.

“So, what we are doing in Edo is to start reformation from the foundation, which is making reforms in our basic education sector to allow us to build the kind of society we want”, he said.

The governor said having a better Nigeria depends on the kind of children being groomed to become the future generation.

“We must focus on the children to renew the future of our country. The Nigerian child should see him or herself as part of the Nigerian society and contribute to its development.’’

He said the 2019 Children’s Day celebration in the state would be held across the three senatorial districts simultaneously on Monday, May 27.

Obaseki said the deputy governor would be in Edo North, commissioner of education in Edo Central, while he would be in Edo South.

Rev. Father Felix Isedu urged parents to bring up their children in the fear of the Lord.

Isedu, who is the Assistant Parish  Priest, cautioned parents against abusing their children, noting that such practice reduces the child’s confidence.
