A Federal High Court sitting in Gudu, FCT has sentenced former Plateau State Governor, Joshua Dariye to fourteen years imprisonment.
Dariye was found guilty of a N1.16bn fraud and pleaded guilty to 15 of the 23-count charges filed against him.
Justice Adebukola Banjoko, who was also responsible for the conviction of former Taraba governor, Jolly Name welcomed defence from Dariye’s attorneys, Esokoro and Kanu Agabi who pleaded that the judge should be merciful in delivering justice as Mr. Dariye was unaware he was impinging on any law of the land in the course of carrying out his actions. Rotimi Jacobs, counsel representing the EFCC stood strongly against Dariye and was begged for mercy when Dariye blurted out his name in court, saying his name is “Jacob” and he’s “a christian.” Mr. Dariye sought for a moment to visit the toilet as proceedings were halted temporarily for the Plateau Senator.
On return, Mrs. Banjoko found Dariye guilty and convicted him of misappropriation of funds. He was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment pending an appeal.
