Edo State House of Assembly members-elect have called on the state governor, Godwin Obaseki to immediately issue a letter of proclamation for the inauguration of the 7th Assembly.
The lawmakers made the demand during a press conference held on Monday, accusing the governor of putting democracy under threat, as it is the legislative arm of government that gives credence to democracy.
According to the legislators, the tenure of the last assembly expired since June 7.
“Today, we the members-elect of the Edo State House of Assembly, wish to bring to knowledge of the people of Edo State and the general public of the attempt by Governor Obaseki to truncate democracy in Edo State.
“Whereas the tenure of members of the last of Assembly expired on 7th June, 2019.
“And whereas, the Governor is constitutionally required to immediately issue a letter of proclamation for the inauguration of the new Assembly to avoid vacuum.
“And whereas, there cannot be democracy without the legislature, (because it is the legislature that gives credence to democracy).
“And whereas all other States have inaugurated their Houses of Assembly.
“Governor Godwin Obaseki has deliberately refused to allow the House of Assembly to function thus usurping the powers of the legislators,” they said.
The lawmakers who noted they are all of the APC said the governor cannot impose his choices for Speaker and Deputy Speaker on members of the assembly.
“It is a public knowledge that all the members-elect in Edo State are all of the same political party, the APC.
“It is also a common knowledge that the Governor no matter how powerful, cannot impose individuals either as Speaker or Deputy Speaker on the legislators.
“At best, he can only lobby for his preferred candidates as was recently witnessed at the National Assembly,” the lawmakers stated.
They called on well-meaning individuals, Oba of Benin, HRM Ewuare II and leadership of the National Assembly to prevail on the governor, noting that they can’t be intimidated.
“Therefore, we urge all well meaning individuals including our well respected Royal Father Omo N Oba and the leadership of the National Assembly to prevail on Governor Godwin Obaseki to immediately issue the letter of proclamation to enable the Edo State House of Assembly to function and to avoid serious constitutional crises.
“Let it be noted that we cannot be intimidated.
“We are ready to defend our democracy and the sanctity of the legislature,” the legislators added.
In a register of lawmakers at the press conference seen by ALEDEH, nineteen (19) members-elect were present.
