FG Re-Arraigns Sowore On Two-Count Charge

...trial resumes March 11

The Federal Government on Thursday re-arraigned the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare on amended charges of treasonable felony.

The duo pleaded not guilty to the two-count charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Recall the prosecutor; Kayode Alilu on Wednesday told the court that the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has taken over the case late last year (2019) and has filed fresh and amended charges.

The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu also ordered the Federal Government to pay a sum of N200, 000 as the cost to the defendants for the frivolous application for adjournment.

Resuming the trial today, Alilu told the court that the FG has made the payment to the defendants, declaring a readiness to proceed with the trial.

However, the defence team which was led by Abdul Mahmud objects to the commencement, saying that the statement of witnesses is yet to be served on them.

According to Abdul Mahmud, what the prosecutor served on them was the summary statement of the four witnesses. He insisted on being served with the full statements.

He also maintained that since the prosecutor has his evidence on tape, he wants him to provide the tape to be played in the open court but the prosecutor says he will need 2 weeks to provide a DVD player to present the evidence.

After listening to both sides, Justice Ojukwu adjourned the case to March 11, 12 and 13 for trial.
