#FIBAWorldCup: Gallant D’Tigers Lose Narrowly To Russia In Opening Game

The Nigerian basketball team, D’Tigers gave a gallant performance but lost to Russia on Saturday morning at the Wuhan Sporting Centre, venue of the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

D’Tigers, ranked 7th in the power rankings for teams at the World Cup gave a solid performance but were hard done by avoidable mistakes.

Having had a 13-year hiatus from the competition, D’Tigers looked strong going into the tournament but signs of slight trepidations were seen in opening exchanges between the teams as they lost the first quarter 18-13. The Nigerians crawled back into the game in the second quarter having a stalemate of 22 points apiece with the Russians.

The third quarter ended in Nigeria’s favour, 18-23 before losing 24-19 in the fourth and final quarter. D’Tigers lost 82-77 to the European champions.

Minnesota Timberwolves power centre, Josh Okoye had 18 points, which was the highest for Nigeria in the game.

Coach Alex Nwora said his team is a very young one that’s learning and they will only get better with many more games.

Nigeria will face Argentina on Monday in their next game at the tournament.
