Former Nigeria’s Secretary to the Government of the Federation and father to the United Kingdom-based Nigerian artiste, Aminu, Alhaji Gidado Idris, has reportedly passed away.
Nigeria’s burgeoning online integrated media platform, ALEDEH gathered that the elder statesman was pronounced dead on Friday night between the hours of 10 and 11 pm at aged eighty-three (83) after a brief illness.
The late Alhaji Idris will be buried according to Islamic rites today, Saturday, December 16, after Firdau (prayers) for him at the National Mosque, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital by 2.00pm.
Born into the royal Idris family in the ancient city of Zaria, Kaduna state, Northern Nigeria, the late Alhaji Idris held various positions after the overthrow of the civilian administration, which include the Secretary and Director of Administration at the National Institute of Strategic Studies, Kuru, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Police Affairs (1984-1986), Chairman of Productivity, Prices and Income Board (1986 and 1988), Permanent Secretary Ministry of Aviation, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance, among others.
The late Alhaji Idris was a trusted aide to the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello (1910-1966) first and last premier of Northern Nigeria, an in-law to President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, a trusted friend to President Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Sanni Abacha (1943-1998), General Abdusalam Abubakar and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Alhaji Idris was a very close aide to President Olusegun Obasanjo who gave him the National honour of CON in 1978. His wife Hajia Maryam Idris was the best friend of Hajia Maryam Babangida (1948-2009) – a friendship that started from their school days as secretariat students at the Federal training centre, Kaduna and spanned over 40 years until Maryam Babangida died on December 27, 2009, in a Los Angeles hospital, United States of America.
The former SGF attended Institute of Administration, Zaria and University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Alhaji Idris served as District Officer for Benue, Sardauna and Adamawa provinces before his appointment as Personal Secretary to the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello.
Alhaji Idris later served as Permanent Secretary in Kaduna State service between 1971 and 1975 and in 1975, he was appointed Secretary of the Constitution Drafting Committee, and became the Secretary to the Constituent Assembly a year later, four years later, 1979 to be precise, the late Alhaji Idris was appointed Clerk to the National Assembly.
The late Idris who was soft spoken and highly principled was appointed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the military regime of Sani Abacha in 1993 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1999.
The late Alhaji Idris, who was a master scribe and record keeper, drafted and typed the dethronement letter served on the Emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi I, in 1963.
Late Alhaji Idris is the father to the United Kingdom-based Nigeria artiste, Aminu whose latest single, “Love You”, featured at number 11 on the UK Club Chart behind A-list artistes like Niall Horan and Jason Derulo.
