Foremost Retired Supreme Court Justice, Otutu Andrews Obaseki Dies

Foremost retired Nigerian Jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Andrew Otutu Obaseki,BSMA,CFR, has passed away.

The Obaseki of Benin Kingdom in Edo state, South South Nigeria, died on Thursday, July 13 at the age of ninety three (93).

Obaseki was born on June 11, 1926 in Benin City, the Edo state capital. He went to Hope Waddell Training Institute in Calabar, the Cross River state capital, where he spent two years after which he went to the School of Agriculture at Moor Plantation, Ibadan.

He was trained as a legal practitioner at the London School of Economics. In 1975 he was appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria as Justice and retired in 1991.

In his reflection on the Nigerian Judiciary, he quoted that ” Justice in the courts is the same whether in native courts, High Courts or Supreme Courts; the measure is the same and it is only when there is an error in the application of the substantive law that the different levels come in to make the necessary correction”.

In 2012, Obaseki denied newspaper reports that he rejected the national honour of the rank of CFR bestowed on him by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

He was until his death this morning the Head of Obaseki Family Worldwide.
