Jerusalem : US Decision Threatens Peace Process And Stability, World Leaders Insist

Many continue to condemn America’s President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Israel has been condemned by United Nations Human Rights Council in at least 45 resolutions, this is the highest time a nation has been condemned on the ground of unending catenated cases of terrorism, illegal occupation of the Palestinian land, and the deliberate violation of the fundamental human rights of children, women and unarmed men of Palestine, Yusuf Jimoh Aweda, Director, Center For Human Rectitude wrote in his article.

Jerusalem contains sites sacred to the three major monotheistic faiths –  Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

Social commentator, Musbaudeen Ganiyu told Aledeh that Trump has stumped on the  remaining prospects to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said “protecting the current status of Jerusalem is very important and it is important that the Islamic world act as one”.

Also, UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, expressed disagreement with Trump’s decision.

May said in a statement “it is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region … The British Embassy to Israel is based in Tel Aviv and we have no plans to move it.”

Lebanon’s president,Michel Aoun, said the US decision threatened the peace process and stability in the wider Middle East.

Emmanuel Macron, French president wrote on Twitter that Paris “doesn’t approve of the decision” and “supports the two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, living in peace and security, with Jerusalem as the capital of the two states”.

Palestinian Authority President,Mahmoud Abass instists that Jerusalem is the “eternal capital of the State of Palestine”.

“The decision by President Trump will not change the reality of the city of Jerusalem and will not give any legitimacy to the Israelis on this issue.”
