Kaduna Central: INEC Reacts To Shehu Sani’s Allegation Of ‘Foul Play’

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted to Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani’s allegations of ‘foul play’ in his case at the election tribunal.

Sani is contesting his loss at the Kaduna Central senatorial election to Uba Sani of the APC.

The Senator, who contested on the platform of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) lost to Sani at the primary election in the APC before switching allegiance to his current party.

He accused the electoral commission of using the same attorney used by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai at the tribunal.

“We have enough evidence that A.U Mustapha is a personal lawyer to Nasiru El-Rufa’i, Governor of Kaduna State.

“He is the one representing Governor El-Rufa’i in a case of defamation which he filed against me in four courts in Kaduna State.

“As a personal lawyer to El-Rufa’i now hired by INEC in a case where El-Rufai is a party is not acceptable.

‘’It is suspicious that the governor of the state and INEC are using A.U. Mustapha and Co, who remains El-Rufa’i personal lawyer,’’ the senator said.
INEC in its reaction said it has a number of attorneys that represent it in courts and they come from different parts of the country.  The electoral body added in a statement released and signed by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner on Information and Voter Education, that El-Rufai was not listed as a respondent by the petitioner, hence dismissing Sani’s claim.
The commission assured members of the public of its responsibility and readiness to provide clarity on grey areas when the need arises.
