The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Ademola Adeleke, winner of the Osun West by-election.
Ademola Adeleke, who rode on the people’s sentiments for his late brother Isiaka Adeleke, defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) and governor Rauf Aregbesola’s candidate, Mudashiru Hussein.
According to the results declared, the PDP candidate defeated his APC opponent, after polling a total of 97, 280 votes while Hussein could only gather a total of 66, 115 votes, making him the closest rival in an election that was contested by eleven (11) political parties.
While Ademola Adeleke of PDP won 9 of the 10 local government areas, APC only managed to win Ejigbo local government which is the local government of its candidate, Mr. Hussein who scored 12, 229 votes, against the PDP which polled 9, 723 votes.
The results was announced by INEC Returning Officer, Olaide Lawal, who is a professor at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.
The final result of the Osun West by-election showed that Ademola Adeleke of the PDP had 31, 165 votes more than his closest rival and APC candidate, Mudashiru Hussein.
The election was adjudged peaceful, fair and transparent by both observers and other participants including PDP and APC candidates, Adeleke and Hussein.
Ademola Adeleke picked the ticket to contest for the vacant seat under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after two other contestants for the ticket, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi and Mr. Olayiwola Falabi stepped down for him.
INEC commenced the by-election in Osun West around 8:00 am, with eleven (11) political parties participating in the by-election.
The election took place in 911 Polling Units in 110 Registration Areas and 1006 Voting Points in 10 local government areas namely: Ayedaade, Ayedire, Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore, Ejigbo, Irewole, Isokan, Iwo and Ola-Oluwa.
The Osun West Senatorial seat became vacant at the National Assembly following the death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke on April 23, who was until his death representing the district.
