Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics : The Games Have Begun

The Winter Olympics officially opened on Friday night.

Today, the first gold medal will be awarded in the women’s cross-country skiathlon.

The skiathlon is a 15km race that begins with a mass start. The first half of the race is skied in the classical style, with competitors then changing their skis and completing the second half using the free technique. The first skier over the line is the winner.

Friday Night, President Muhammadu Buhari extended his best wishes to Team Nigeria.

“Your patriotism, sacrifice, hard work and personal dedication in choosing to stand with our homeland and lift our flag high at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in South Korea, will continue to inspire Nigerians, especially the young people’’ Buhari said through a statement.

The parade of athletes started, according to custom, by the Greek team. The delegations of Ghana, Eritrea and Nigeria were among the first to enter.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised the excellent work done by the PyeongChang Organising Committee and the International Olympic Committee for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

In his message, he said  “the Olympic spirit is the most important symbol of peace in this world which sees so many conflicts, so many victims. The Olympic spirit allows people to be together from all over the world, to respect each other, to serve the themes of tolerance and mutual understanding. These make the basic elements of peace possible.”
