Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) lecturer and foremost Online Journalist, Dr. Qasim Akinreti, has won the 2017 election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos chapter, Southwest Nigeria.
Dr. Akinreti who contested the Chairmanship seat of the Union pulled two hundred and eighty-eight (288) votes to defeat his only challenger, Adeleye Ajayi who scored two hundred and seventy-two (272) votes.
While Akinreti who has a Ph.D. in Online journalism, won the chairmanship seat, Abiola Becky defeated Innocent Anaba to win the Vice Chairmanship seat.
Abiola Becky scored two hundred and eighty-two (282) votes to become the Union’s new number two person while her only challenger, Innocent Anaba pulled two hundred and seventy-five (275) votes.
Meanwhile, Dr. Akinreti had said members’ welfare, capacity building, and agriculture will be his priority if elected into office.
To achieve this, the online journalism guru said he will institute a budgeting process to spell out income and expenditure for members in order to endanger financial stability.
His words, ”Mandate 2017 is a new beginning for Lagos NUJ, in terms of integrity, accountability, and welfare of our members.
”We shall ensure professionalism and restore the dignity of our members because our word is our bound and we shall deliver our promises to our members who voted us into power. We shall invest in human capital, media, properties, and agriculture as the case may be,” Dr. Akinreti said at Vanguard newspaper Headquarters, Kiri-Kiri Canal, Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city.
