Former two-time representative of Katsina North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Alhaji Mahmud Kanti Bello has reportedly passed away.
Alhaji Bello died in the early hours of Tuesday, August 29 in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital at age seventy two (72).
The death of the former Senate Whip was confirmed in a terse statement by the younger brother to former Katsina State Deputy Governor, Abdullahi Faskari.
“I am directed to inform everybody that we lost Senator Kanti Bello early hours of this mourning (Tuesday) at Abuja. Burial arrangement will be announced later,” he said.
The late Bello was elected as a Katsina senator in 2003 on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform. In the 2004 local elections in his Katsina, he protested strongly against electoral fraud which resulted in People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidates being returned.
Bello successfully ran for reelection on the platform of the PDPin 2007. By the middle of his second term in the senate, Bello was among those senators who had not solely sponsored any private bills.
In June 2017, Bello, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that he regretted inviting President Muhammadu Buhari into politics, adding that he would campaign against him in 2019 because ‘the past two years of President Buhari’s administration has been a waste’.
