A Majority Leader representing Lau constituency, Joseph Kunini has been elected on Monday as the new Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly.
The lawmakers also elected Hamman-Adama Abdulahi, representative of Bali II constituency, as the Deputy Speaker.
The change in the House’s leadership follows the resignation of the former Speaker, Peter Abel Diah and his deputy, Charles Maijankai, Sunday night.
Their resignation letters were read by the Clerk of the House, Orngu Mela, at a plenary on Monday morning.
The new Speaker’s election was unanimous with 16 of the 24 members present at the sitting.
Kunini, a third-term member of the House, pledged to be equitable in carrying out his duties.
“This is a house of justice and equity. Taraba should be greater than any individual and we must work hard to take the state to greater heights. I will work to champion this.
“I will run an open door parliament where even the minority will have a say.
“Thank you for this trust. I assure you that it will be used as a medium to serve God and humanity. Thank you for this privilege,” he said.
Also, Douglas Ndatse was nominated to replace Kinini as the Majority Leader.
