Twitter accounts belonging to United States Presidential Candidate, Joe Biden; Founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates; Chief Executive Officer of SpaceX, Elon Musk; Tech Giant, Apple, among other prominent persons, were apparently hacked on Wednesday.
They went on to post tweets that appeared to promote a Bitcoin scam.
The accounts, along with those of former US President Barack Obama, Rapper, Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West; CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett, CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos; and former Mayor of New York and media entrepreneur, Mike Bloomberg, posted similar tweets soliciting donations via Bitcoin to their verified profiles.
“Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time,” Gates’ tweet said, promising to double all payments to a Bitcoin address for the next 30 minutes.
So far, the Bitcoin address tweeted by the hackers has been sent over 12 Bitcoins, worth more than $110,000.
Twitter has said it is aware of the security incident impacting its accounts and is investigating it.
