Nigerians are connecting bright dots on the map of the world, breaking new grounds, setting new records and as Osatohanmwen Osemwengie will put it “researching what doesn’t exist yet”
Dr. Osatohanmwen Osemwengie, a Nigerian from Edo state has made the country proud in Texas, USA by setting a very high pace for academicians to follow. He left the country in the early 80s and become a force to reckon with in Robotics Engineering. If there was a Nobel for Robotics Engineering, Osato, as he is called, may have won one.
Dr Osato Osemwengie has 6 Master’s (MSc) degrees and is planning on continuing his 7th master degree in January, 2017. According to him, he will have his 4th Ph.D degree at University of Texas at Dallas in September, 2017.
“6 Masters degree, not bad. I was in the State of Ohio on Monday, December 12, 2016 for my Masters of Business Administration (MBA) graduation. This is my 6th master degree and will begin work on my 7th Master degree in January, 2017 and my 4th PhD degree at University of Texas at Dallas in September, 2017
You know the proverb “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” Well, for me, all work and my play is acquiring degrees. Learning is relaxing and takes my mind of job projects”
Dr. Osatohanmwen Osemwengie has been an integral member of the American armed forces, building drones for the United States Army. These drones are used for surveillance to gather important information, as well as take out terrorist camps do.
He is currently working on a military game and collision avoidance software for drones.
Here are 3 interesting things to know about him:
1. Osato is an accomplished academician
Dr. Osemwengie has four graduate degrees, a Doctorate degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently working on his 5th and 6th Master’s degree in software engineering at Regis University and Information Systems at the Keller Graduate School of Management.
He is prominent in several programming languages including Java, C++, ASP.net, SQL and database design and implementation, API server side programming, and website development.
2. He is the founder of a US-based University
Dr. Osato Osemwengie is the founder of the Open Robotics University; a tuition free engineering degree-granting university that allows people to further exercise their talents and expand their knowledge into all fields related to engineering.
3. He is recognized both home and abroad
Prior to his trip to the States in 1982, Dr. Osemwengie was as an administrator at the College of Education, Benin City. There, he was recognized as the Educator of the Year for securing funding used to design and implement pre-service teacher education programs.
Dr. Osato served as the Administrator of the Columbus City School System from 1992 to 2011, where he coordinated staff and student recruitment. He’s also developed programs to increase staff and student retention. He taught for five years (1987- 1992) in the aforementioned school district.
In 2011, he founded the “world’s first tuition free, engineering degree-granting university,” Open Robotics University. The University, which was powered by Google+, with awards bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees in robotics engineering for free.
The university headquarters is in Ohio. Open Robotics University currently has students in 45 cities in 25 countries. It is unclear if the university still exists. Some claim, it went defunct in 2013.
HE IS ALSO A FAMILY MAN
In 2016, he visited his major US base, in Ohio, where he met with his family and shared how much he will miss them, when he returns to Florida.
“My greatest moment from my visit to Ohio for my graduation was spending some time with my children. I have not seen them in two years,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“My daughter has been working in Japan for two years, and my son busy with College and now returning to graduate school. Sad to leave Ohio, again, I will be going to visit brothers in Texas for four days, before returning to my base in Jacksonville, Florida”
Even though he still hold on to his strong ties in Nigeria and may have visited the country in December, 2016, after his mother’s 85th birthday.
“My mom is celebrating her 85 years birthday today….. You are very special, mom! Happy Birthday! I am looking forward to celebrating Christmas and New Year with you in Nigeria this year” he wrote in a note to his mother.
In addition to these, Dr. Osemwengie was a facilitator for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- sponsored Ohio Leadership for Integrating Technology Initiative (OLIT).
He trained elementary, middle, high school principals and assistant principals to use adaptive learning staff development activities which are designed to identify instructional approaches that emphasized integrating technology into the learning and teaching processes.
Having studied software engineering and management of information system at the graduate levels, he expertly trained to facilitate the integration of technology into teaching and learning process workshops and seminars, coached robotics and serve as software engineering mentors to robotics teams, 2008 selectee to present at the world robotics championships, sets Dr. Osemwengie apart from most educational administrator contemporaries.
He keeps a low profile though.
