The University of Benin is one of Nigeria and Africa’s most reputable citadel of learning. Established in 1970, the institution has grown to become a consistent producer of graduates, who have mostly gone on to achieve enviable feats in various areas of human discipline.
In this part of the series made to celebrate the achievements of graduates of the university, two alumni, who have distinguished themselves in their professions are featured. They are;
PROF FELIX OKIEIMEN is the President of Institute of Chartered Chemist of Nigeria & the current Dean of School of Post Graduate Studies, University of Benin.
He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Benin (1975).
Prof. Okieimen is a former; Deputy Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, President, Materials Science and Technology Society(2006-2010), President, Chemical Society of Nigeria (2007-2011). He has served as consulting chemist, project leader and training coordinator to several environmental service companies, including Thermosteel Nigeria Ltd, Jacobs Well & Tools Service Ltd, Watewell Services Nigeria Ltd and as waste management adviser to Shell Petroleum Development Company.
Prof Okieimen is listed in the Who is Who in Nigeria & Who is Who in Science & Technology. As a pacesetter, he was the first alumnus to deliver the University of Benin Founder’s Day Lecture after it was pronounced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. F.F.O Orumwense in 2015 that only alumni would deliver the lecture from henceforth.
DR. SOLOMON ARASE is the immediate past Inspector General of Police.
He holds an LLB from the Faculty of Law, University of Benin and was honoured with an honorary doctorate degree in 2016.
Dr. Solomon Arase served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, Panti-Yaba, Lagos between 2009- 2011, he was Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State Command, between August 2011 and March 2012, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Force Intelligence Bureau at the Force Head Quarters, Abuja from March 2012 to August 2014. Dr Arase is a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence College (fdc). He is currently the Chairman, Task Force on Private Property Protection, Edo State.
On 23rd Nov., 2017, Dr Solomon Arase delivered the 2017 Founder’s Day Lecture of UNIBEN.
