Vandals of the Warri-Itakpe rail line have been apprehended.
ALEDEH News reports that the suspects who allegedly destroyed the tracks and carted away the rail rods were arrested after a video that went viral.
In the viral video, the vandals had used saw-like objects to cut off several sections of the track, thereby exposing passengers to danger.
Also, some bolts and knots were removed which suggests that the vandals were ready to cart away the iron rails.
Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria had raised concerns on Thursday, saying the incident happened around KM 30, Adogo, a Kogi state section of the rail.
Itakpe-Warri railway line links Warri in Delta state to Ajaokuta in Kogi state. It was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2020 and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi flagged off freight and haulage services on the rail line in April 2021.
The vandals’ arrest comes few days after the NRC Northern District Engineer, Haruna Sabo announced the arrest of two persons suspected of vandalising rail tracks along the Kaduna-Zaria rail line.
Sabo said those arrested were members of a syndicate that specialised in removing rail clips that hold sleepers and rail tracks together.
