A group in Kano State has held protests challenging the creation of four new Emirates by Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The group led by Yusuf Rabiu called for an immediate rescinding of the decision to increase the Emirates in the state to five.
Men of the Nigeria Police dispersed the protesting crowd along the Gidan Murtala Road.
Rabiu told journalists that the new Emirates will create disunity and great enmity amongst the populace and said there are more pressing needs in the state.
“More emirates are not needed,” “Education, water, security and peace are our priority”, “We say no to undemocratic laws” and “We say no to politicising emirship.”
He said the new move which he described as a witch hunt was made to show disrespect towards the Emir of Kano.
“The move will ruin our heritage that has survived for over two thousand years, as the grand emirate will lose prestige in the process. And finally, none of the emerging ones will fill the gap in this 21st Century.”
The group also condemned the investigation of Isa Bayero, one of the Emir’s uncles who is in charge of the the Emirate’s finances. He was investigated by the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-corruption Commission.
”I was not given any specific time to report but if I am able to go through the documents (today), May 9, I will call back the following day to face the panel for further interrogation,” he said.
Recall that ALEDEH had on Wednesday reported that the Kano Assembly had created four new Emirates namely: Rano, Karaye, Gaya and Bichi.
