Biafra: Reactions Trail Nnamdi Kanu Bail Conditions


Nigerians and observers of the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of London based radio Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have expressed their thoughts on the bail conditions given to the Biafran leader by an Abuja division of the Federal High court.

Recall that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Tuesday, April 25, granted bail to Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu who described himself as the ‘Lion of Biafra’, was granted bail by Justice Binta Nyako on health grounds

According to the bail conditions given to the Biafran leader, he is expected to provide three sureties one of whom must be a serving Senator, a Jewish religious leader and highly respected person, who own land anywhere in Abuja.

While the bail bond has been set at N100 million for each surety, Mr. Kanu was also ordered never to grant any interviews to the press, pending the outcome of his trial.

He will not be seen in a gathering of more than 10 people.

Giving her ruling, Justice Nyako held that Kanu’s bail will be revoked, if any of the orders are flouted.

Meanwhile, his co-accused, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi were denied bail by the court.

Justice Nyako cited treasonable felony as the reason for her ruling, adding that the charges against them is a serious offence against the state.

Kanu, a political activist based in United Kingdom and Director of London based Radio Biafra, was arrested in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on October 14, 2015, by the Department of States Services (DSS) on conspiracy and terrorism charges that were later changed to treason.

While pro-Biafra supports celebrated the bail, others faulted the bail conditions given to the Biafran leader.
